Four Florida Counties Open April 1, 2015 for Gag Grouper Harvest

by on Mar.25, 2015, under Horseshoe Beach, Keaton Beach to Fenholloway, St. Marks, Aucilla and Econfina, Steinhatchee

From:  The Fishing Wire

State waters off the coast of Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor counties will open to recreational harvest of gag grouper starting April 1.

This regional season will remain open through June 30, with the first day of the closure being July 1. The season also includes all waters of Apalachicola Bay and Indian Pass, including those in Gulf County, and all waters of the Steinhatchee River, including those in Dixie County.

Gag grouper caught in state Gulf waters (from shore to 9 nautical miles out) off the four counties can be landed on the Gulf County side of Indian Pass and the Dixie County side of the Steinhatchee River, but may not be taken ashore in other areas that are closed to harvest. For example, a gag grouper caught April 1 in state waters off Jefferson County cannot be taken ashore in Levy County or parts of Dixie County outside of the Steinhatchee River. To see maps of these areas, go to MyFWC.com/Fishing and select “Saltwater,” “Recreational Regulations” and “Gulf Grouper.”

In the remainder of Gulf of Mexico state waters, anglers will be able to keep gag grouper from July 1 through Dec. 3, with the season closing Dec. 4. State waters off Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson and Taylor counties will not be open during the July-through-December season. Monroe County state waters follow Atlantic grouper rules.

The season in all federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico also opens July 1 but closes Dec. 3, with the last day of harvest being Dec. 2.

In the Gulf, the gag grouper recreational harvest minimum size limit is 22 inches total length and the bag limit is two gag grouper per person. Recreational anglers targeting groupers in the Gulf may harvest no more than four grouper per person per day (within this four-fish limit, anglers may keep only two gag grouper).

2013 gag grouper recreational season set for Gulf state waters in Florida

by on Feb.13, 2013, under FLORIDA'S BIG BEND AND EMERALD COAST

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) set the 2013 recreational gag grouper season for Gulf of Mexico state waters at its meeting Feb. 13 in Orlando.

The season in most state waters is slated to start July 1 and end Dec. 3.

State waters off the coast of Taylor, Jefferson, Wakulla and Franklin counties, including waters of the Steinhatchee River, Apalachicola Bay and Indian Pass, will have a gag grouper open season of April 1 through June 30. This four-county region will not be open during the July 1 through Dec. 3 season.

The Commission selected the April-to-June season for the four-county region to allow fishing opportunities for private recreational anglers in this area when gag grouper are closer to shore and can be safely accessed by smaller boats. Because it is the least densely populated region of Florida’s Gulf Coast, fishing effort for gag grouper is relatively low in these counties. By replacing the July 1-through-Dec. 3 season with a shorter but more desirable season in the Big Bend, the Commission hopes to balance the economic and social needs of this region with the conservation needs of gag grouper.

Monroe County is excluded from the Gulf of Mexico season because it is included in the Atlantic season for gag grouper.

The selected seasons will offer Florida anglers the most number of gag grouper fishing days while still contributing to the current rebuilding plan. The federal season has not yet been finalized but is expected to start July 1 and end sometime in late November or early December.

RECREATIONAL RED GROUPER BAG LIMIT TO INCREASE IN GULF STATE WATERS; GROUPER SEASON CLOSURES NEAR

by on Dec.21, 2011, under FLORIDA'S BIG BEND AND EMERALD COAST, TAMPA BAY AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

The recreational red grouper bag limit in Gulf of Mexico state waters (excluding Monroe County) will increase Dec. 30 from two to four fish, followed by the Jan. 1 season closure of shallow-water grouper in Atlantic state waters.

The red grouper bag limit increase is one of several fishery management changes made at the November Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) meeting in Key Largo.
Management changes in 2012 will also affect gag grouper season, which is currently closed to fishing in Gulf of Mexico state waters (excluding Monroe County) and will continue to be closed through March 31, 2012. (This includes the regularly scheduled annual closure from Feb. 1 through March 31 in Gulf state waters.)

Both measures will help the state achieve consistency with federal red and gag grouper management efforts.

Federal managers are working on a plan to further protect gag grouper, which is overfished and undergoing overfishing in the Gulf. The FWC will revisit state gag grouper management efforts in February 2012, once federal rules are solidified.

Season closures for red and gag grouper, as well as other shallow-water groupers, are also nearing. In Atlantic state waters, including Monroe County, the season closes Jan. 1 and reopens May 1. Shallow-water grouper season closes Feb. 1 in Gulf state waters and reopens April 1.
Shallow water groupers in Gulf state waters include gag, red, black, yellowfin and yellowmouth groupers; scamp; and rock and red hind. In Atlantic state waters, it also includes tiger grouper, coney and graysby.

November 16, 2011–Gag and Red Grouper Management Changes

by on Nov.20, 2011, under FLORIDA'S BIG BEND AND EMERALD COAST, TAMPA BAY AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

FWC changes gag, red grouper management in Gulf, soon achieving consistency with federal protections

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) voted Nov. 16 to change how gag and red grouper are managed in Gulf of Mexico state waters.

The decision came during day one of the two-day November Commission meeting in Key Largo.

The changes, which include additional protections for gag grouper while increasing the bag limit for red grouper, will make state protections consistent with gag and red grouper federal rules in the Gulf of Mexico.

“We are listening and are very concerned about the economy, jobs and managing resources for longevity as well,” Commissioner Ron Bergeron said following stakeholder conversation.

Changes for red grouper will take effect Dec. 23 in Gulf of Mexico state waters (excluding Monroe County) and will include increasing the recreational bag limit from two to four fish.

Commissioners also voted to continue the current gag grouper closure in Gulf of Mexico state waters (excluding Monroe County) into 2012. The closure was set to expire at the end of 2011.

This measure will help the state achieve consistency with gag grouper management efforts affecting federal Gulf waters.

The FWC believes applying the same recreational open and closed harvest seasons for gag grouper in Gulf state waters as in federal offshore waters would maximize fishing opportunities for anglers and charter boat operators along Florida’s Gulf coast.

Federal managers are currently working on a plan to further protect gag grouper, which is overfished and undergoing overfishing in the Gulf. The FWC will revisit state gag grouper management efforts in February 2012, once federal rules are solidified.

IMPORTANT!–Gag Grouper Season Ends November 15, 2011

by on Nov.10, 2011, under FLORIDA'S BIG BEND AND EMERALD COAST, TAMPA BAY AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

It’s seems that just when the weather and water temperatures bring the gag grouper close to shore along the Big Bend that the season ends.  This year, it’s November 15.  And, of course, the gags are hungry.  So, if you have a chance to get out, do it soon.  I fished on the 9th with Capt. Dan Clymer out of Crystal River and we limited out after just a few hours of trolling big 113 and 111 MirrOlures in water that wasn’t over 25-feet deep.

Gag Grouper Report, Crystal River, Capt. Dan Clymer, September 18, 2011

by on Sep.19, 2011, under Chassahowitzka and Homosassa, Ozello to Crystal River

The 2011 gag grouper season started off very well here off Crystal River and Homosassa. I fished out of both locations for the first two opening days and found several hefty gags (and some cobia). The water temperature is still in the 80’s and it’s just a little bit to early to troll. Once the water temperature reaches the mid 70’s, the grouper will become more aggressive and happily run down some plugs.  So, for the time being, bottom fishing with hand sized pinfish has been the bait of choice. I targeted the 20ft to 28ft depth range and found some quality fish in the 12lb to 15lb range. Some other great reports came in from the 45ft to 55ft range and a mixed bag of both gag and red grouper were on the same structures. Good fishing and it’s only going to get better…

Just a Reminder-Gulf gag grouper recreational harvest in federal waters closes January 1, 2011

by on Dec.31, 2010, under FLORIDA'S BIG BEND AND EMERALD COAST, TAMPA BAY AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

The recreational harvest of gag grouper in Gulf of Mexico federal waters off Florida will be prohibited beginning Jan. 1.  Federal fisheries managers recently announced a temporary rule that closes Gulf federal waters to recreational fishing for gag grouper for six months while they develop long-term measures to improve gag grouper populations.  Gulf federal waters extend beyond nine nautical miles from Florida’s shoreline.

Gulf state waters (from shore out to nine nautical miles) will remain open for recreational gag grouper harvest until Feb. 1.  However, people on federally permitted for-hire reef-fish vessels may not harvest or possess gag grouper in state waters during the temporary federal closure.
