Just a reminder:

The recreational season for bay scallops opened July 1 and lasts until September 25.  Good information at

The season for gag grouper opened July 1, and lasts until October 31.

The season for red snapper is now open until July 17 due to an extension by the FWC.  Foul weather conditions caused the FWC to rethink the previous closure date of July 10.

Having difficulty understanding Florida’s fishing regulations?–Gulf Recreational Seasons Monthly Calendar now available online!

by on May.12, 2012, under FLORIDA'S BIG BEND AND EMERALD COAST, TAMPA BAY AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

Florida’s fishing “rules” can be complicated, if not downright intimidating.  There are State rules and Federal rules.  There is a 9-mile boundary that separates State and Federal waters that’s sometimes hard to find (There’s no line drawn across the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico!).  And sometimes the State’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) makes rules that don’t coordinate with the Federal rules.  In any case, for the casual angler, these rules and regulations can be daunting.

The website for the FWC (www.myfwc.com) has traditionally been a good resource, but it’s never been one of the easier sites to navigate.  Now, with the addition of the Gulf Recreational Seasons Monthly Calendar, you can take a quick look at the months and at the species you can catch and keep then.  This is a great tool, and I recommend you download the PDF of the Calendar, print a copy and put it in your boat or tackle box. You’ll find a link to the PDF (which is a cross-platform, Acrobat document that opens on just about any computer), on the FWC’s Saltwater Fishing Regulations page.

Gulf of Mexico Grouper Regulations to Change, January 1, 2011

by on Nov.30, 2010, under FLORIDA'S BIG BEND AND EMERALD COAST, TAMPA BAY AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

On December 1, 2010, the federal register will publish the announcement tomorrow announcing the reduction of the gag grouper quota to 0, which means no harvest of recreational gag grouper beginning Jan 1 and the commercial harvest of gag will be limited to 100,000 pounds until further notice.

The SSC will meet in December to reassess the stock assessment that declared the Gag Grouper overfished and undergoing overfishing.

The red grouper bag limit will remain at 2 fish per person, but the red grouper total allowable catch will be reduced, which will negatively affect the commercial fishermen.
