Homosassa Inshore Fishing Weekly Report, 1/22/13, from Capt. William Toney

by on Jan.22, 2013, under Chassahowitzka and Homosassa

Up and downs in the gulf water temperature have the fish in one spot one day and then back up the creeks on the next. On a recent trip we targeted redfish with some success. There were a few redfish around the fish creek area but getting them to eat even a live shrimp was a chore. After poling around for a while we did sight cast two keepers. The largest redfish of the trip actually came from Tiger Tail Bay almost within sight of MacReas from a deep hole in the river. Goes to show the fish are spread out.
Trout fishing in the backcountry creeks and deeper channels has been very good. The best baits have been root beer MirrOlure LiL’ Johns and D.O.A. CAL Shads. I’ve better luck fishing the bait very slowly and near the bottom. On the near shore rock piles the sheepshead bite has been good. There are also some nice sized porgies and black sea bass around the rocks also. Live shrimp is the best bait. Look for high incoming tide midday this weekend.
