Enlarged and Improved Boat Ramp at Jena, on Steinhatchee River, Now Open–March 2014

by on Mar.16, 2014, under Steinhatchee

After what seemed a pretty long time, the enlarged and improved boat launch at Jena, on the Dixie County side of the Steinhatchee River, is now open.  This free ramp is located at the end of CR358, just across the river from the Sea Hag Marina.  What was a single, steep ramp has now been extended to allow easier launching and has been doubled to two lanes.  Floating docks straddle both lanes.

In the past, this ramp has been the scene of many a traffic jam, and now, with the addition of the second lane and the opening of the new boat ramp on the Steinhatchee side of the river, access for fishermen and scallopers should be easier.  While there is still no “official” parking lot for the Jena ramps, street-side parking is easy and plentiful.

Improvements to Boat Ramp at Jena in Dixie County to be Completed December 2013

by on Nov.12, 2013, under Steinhatchee

If you’ve ever launched at the boat ramp at Jena, on the Steinhatchee River, across from the Sea Hag Marina, you know the perils.  However, the ramp is being re-built and hopefully the problem of the bad drop-off will be fixed.  No details, but based on a quick tour of the site, it looks like the ramp will be doubled in size and extended much farther into the river.

The Jena boat ramp is located at the end of CR358 on the south side of the Steinhatchee River, in Dixie County

According to good sources in Dixie County, the construction should be completed by mid-December, ahead of schedule, and just in time for this winter’s influx of seatrout in the river.  In fact, a favorite wintertime seatrout spot is the “suicide hole”, just downstream from the ramp.  That’s where seatrout go to commit suicide in the winter months!!!

First Hand Look–Steinhatchee’s New Boat Ramp Facility, August 2011

by on Aug.19, 2011, under Steinhatchee

I tried the new ramp at Steinhatchee the other day.  What a great facility!  The new concrete ramps (1 single-wide and 1 double-wide) are a welcome addition to the Steinhatchee community and to Taylor County.  Not only are the ramps good, but the traffic seems to flow smoothly and there’s plenty of parking.  I suspect that the lots will fill up on busy scalloping weekends, but for the rest of the year, you should have no problem finding a spot for your truck and trailer. The cost to launch is $5.  It’s a simple matter of getting an envelope, putting a $5 bill in it, and putting the hanger tag on your rearview mirror.  If you plan to use the ramp more than 4 times a year, you can run up to Perry and get a $20 yearly pass at the Taylor County Courthouse.

Steinhatchee Boat Ramp

The new boat ramp at Steinhatchee is big--and there's no bad cross current like the one on the Jena side of the river.

I wasn’t launching a big boat, but did see some pontoon and offshore boats being launched.  The concrete slab ramp extends well into the dredged out basin, so there doesn’t seem to be any danger of dropping your trailer tires over the end.  I launched on a moderate tide and when I returned, the tide level was about 1.0 foot.  I had no problem having plenty of ramp then.  Also, the basin’s depth wasn’t a problem, and I suspect it will have at least 3 feet of water on a zero tide.  The same goes for the outlet channel that runs straight out from the ramp.  I’ve used the entrance to the east, but only on a flood tide, and only in my flats skiff.  I think everyone should use the bigger channel and then run straight out to the river channel.

In my opinion, this new facility gets two thumbs up!

New and Improved St. Marks Lighthouse Boat Ramp Reopens April 23, 2011

by on Apr.15, 2011, under St. Marks, Aucilla and Econfina

From the St. Marks NWR folks:

The St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge staff and construction contractors have been working hard to get the ramp up and running. We realize this Gulf of Mexico access point is prized for its close proximity to the East and West Flats fishing grounds. This new ramp offers a divided launch for two vessels at the same time, plus a safety curb at the ramps end for runaways.
