2013 Bay Scalloping Season to Open Early–June 29!

by on Jun.26, 2013, under Chassahowitzka and Homosassa, Horseshoe Beach, Keaton Beach to Fenholloway, Ozello to Crystal River, Port St. Joe, Mexico Beach and St. Joseph Bay, St. Marks, Aucilla and Econfina, Steinhatchee, Suwannee

The FWC has just announced that the season for harvesting bay scallops has been extended and will now open on June 29, rather than July 1.  That means there will be an extra weekend to have a great time and bring home some good eats!

What is the water clarity like? Last year, Tropical Storm Debby made the coast very brown with tannin and it was impossible to see scallops at Steinhatchee. Did Tropical Storm Andrea cause the scallop grounds to get brown this summer?

TS Andrea was a bust, and hit the coast south (and on the ‘good’ side) of Steinhatchee. So….the water’s clear and the scallops are waiting for you to come get them!

What is it looking like for St. Marks this year? I’ve hed mixed reports but for the most part I hear the numbers have decreased.

Alex…the “numbers” provided by FWRI were low, but that’s never a true indication. Sea grasses are healthy and with no major rainstorms, I suspect the scalloping is good there. Contact either Shields Marina or Shell Island Fish Camp for up-to-the-minute reports.

Hey Tommy, Doug here, Scotty Cakes’ buddy in Ocala. What are the coordinates for Crystal River Scalloping? We usually go to Steinhatchee, but this year, we’re heading to CR.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Doug…I talked with Marla Chancey at the Citrus Visitors’ Bureau this AM and she said folks were having the best luck in 3 to 4-feet of water off the St. Martins Keys, between Homosassa and CR. I’d suggest looking for “the fleet”.
