BIG FISH, BIG FUN
26th Annual Cobia Tournament to Lure Anglers
HOMOSASSA, Fla. – After another highly successful event in 2010, the Cobia Big Fish Tournament will return to Old Homosassa next weekend for its 26th year.
Large cash prizes, food and entertainment will lure hundreds of fishing fans to the annual event on the weekend of June 4th and 5th . Competitors can fish out of either MacRae’s Bait and Tackle on the Homosassa River or Twin Rivers Marina on the Crystal River.
Anglers will compete for a total estimated purse of over $14,000 in cash and prizes, and whoever lands the largest cobia will reel in an estimated $6,000 prize. The Homosassa Game Fish Club hosts the tournament every year.
“The Cobia Big Fish Tournament is a fixture on the Citrus County calendar and a favorite event of many anglers,” said Marla Chancey, Director of the Citrus County Visitors & Convention Bureau. “We expect another outstanding year and some truly colossal cobia catches.”
Those electing to stay onshore during the tournament will also have plenty to choose from at MacRae’s, including a barbeque dinner on Saturday, an old-fashioned fish fry on Sunday and live entertainment all weekend long.
Entry costs a flat rate of $125 a boat. Participation in the event is strictly limited to 200 boats, so tournament organizers encourage early registration to ensure a space in the competition.
Later in month, seafood lovers will have another reason to celebrate in Citrus County: Recreational scallop season opens early on Saturday, June 25. The fun will then continue until September 25, making this year’s season a full three weeks longer than usual.
