Capt. William Toney’s April 10, 2011 Homosassa Inshore Fishing Weekly Report

by on Apr.10, 2011, under Chassahowitzka and Homosassa, Ozello to Crystal River

While filming two episodes of Nature Coast Outdoors this past week I was able to learn  how to improve a already excellent lure and fish in a location I haven’t been to since I was a lot younger. While filming aboard the Miss Jennifer Ann with guest Jerry McBride of D.O.A. Lures, Jerry added a D.O.A. Hot Head to the 5.5 glow jerk bait that works so well on the Nature Coast for most inshore game fish but especially well for big seatrout. The Hot Head added a set of eye’s to the bait and color, this made a target for the large trout we were catching to strike at. The Hot Head was slid over the top of the bait and then pierced with a 3/0 Owner bait hook through the Hot Head and 5.5 jerk bait. We experimented with some different colored jerk baits and Hot Head combinations and all received a explosive top water strike on the clear, shallow, rocky bottom.

South of Homosassa I had the privilege of fishing with Capt. Josh Fritz out of the small island community of Aripeka. Capt. Josh who guides out of Precision Tackle in Spring Hill is very knowledgeable of the area and it’s tides, that are the key to Aripeka’s excellent fishery. We had a good time fishing together and caught a variety of species but the three that I like the best were the 24″trout, 30″ snook and 32″ redfish. That’s right the good captain put me on a slam and the fish were all caught within a 100′ radius.

The seatrout bite in Homosassa is still going strong with good catches coming from the offshore rockpiles and shallow rocky points near the keys. The best baits offshore have been 1/4 oz. jigs with glow, newpenny and clear gold glitter tails. Close to shore the jerk baits are the best way to go. North of Crystal River at the Spoil Banks there are plenty of spanish mackerel and the best way to catch a mess of them is with a chum bag, long shank hooks and shrimp. Cobia are starting to show up at nearshore rocks and the docks ( caught ones ) in Homosassa. On the flats there are plenty following stingrays but most are small. The larger cobia are out in deep water. A few redfish are showing up on the high tides near the mouth of the creeks, the folks I talked to that caught them said shrimp was the best bait. High incoming tide this weekend is a good one because of the full moon, so be on the water around 9 or 10 o’clock and you’ll hit it just right. Capt. William Toney www.homosassainshorefishing.com
