I’ll say it again: “Florida has no real BBQ tradition”. However, there are several levels of chopped pork with red sauce that I enjoy. Not Sonny’s, and certainly not the faux-bbq/sloppy joes you get in most chain BBQ places in the state, but every so often I get the itch for a good pork sandwich. I’ve been to Skully’z in Steinhatchee a couple of times now, and it may have been that I was really, really hungry after a long day of fishing–but their BBQ sandwich is pretty damned good. Good chopped pork and a simple red sauce on a nice bun. And their French fries are excellent, too! Other things of the menu are a smoked sausage dog or a smoked mullet plate. I’m going to try them next!
Skully’z is located on First Street in Steinhatchee, across from the school. They’re open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11-8PM (or so.). When scallop season arrives in July, they’ll be opening on Thursdays, too.
