The Everglades National Park Birding, Wildlife and Photo Expedition is a 3 1/2 hour, naturalist-led, boating experience in the Park. We have regularly been encoutering manatees, dolphins, loggerhead turtles and many, many species of birds.  However, the ospreys are particularly special right now.  These raptors mate for life and return each year to the same nest to raise theiryoung.  The adults are busy now with nests construction and courtship.  It is common to see an adult land on a mangrove tree and violently tear of a branch and bring it back the nest where it carefully weaves it in place.  Lots of great photo opportunites on this tour.

Our most popular tour, The Boat Assisted Kayak Eco Tour is now available from Marco Island and Everglades National Park!  There are wonderful areas for birding and wildlife around Marco.  A power boat and very stable kayaks are an excellent platform for viewing and photography.  This intimate tour only has space for six guests so reservations are required for the two daily departures (9:00 and 1:30). For more information click here

Four additional experiences are available from Marco Island:

Marco Island Dolphin & Wildlife Boat Tour – (2 hrs)
Marco 10,000 Islands Boat Excursion – (3.5 hrs)
Marco Rockery Bay Kayak Eco Tour
Marco Keewaydin Beach Kayak Eco Tour

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! – The Ninth Annual Everglades National Park Paddle-In will be February 16, 2013. Details to follow! The Florida Society for Ethical Eco Tourism is the beneficiary for this year’s event!  Please visit their website, become a member and signup for their newsletter

Featured Tour -

Boat Assisted Kayak Eco Tour This is our most popular eco-adventure and combines the best of a Boat Tour, a Kayak Tour and a Walking Tour in a single great learning experience. Depending on the season, you can encounter manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, bald eagles, ospreys, herons, egrets, pelicans, alligators, rosette spoonbills and/or numerous species of fish and shore birds. A very comfortable transport boat will bring you deep into the Park with your Naturalist guide. Once we reach our first destination, we “slow” the tour down using very stable, comfortable kayaks to get you close to the flora and fauna. Imagine paddling next to a manatee or a dolphin!!! (No previous kayaking experience is required and we have single & two-person kayaks). Continue your interpretive experience with a walking tour on pristine barrier island beach … a beach that is seldom visited by tourists. (9am and 1:30pm)

Recently, Everglades Area Tours hosted Doug Gardner’s Wild Photo Adventures in the Everglades as we took him on a multiday photo safari from the freshwater swamps to the marine coastal ecosystems. Look for two episodes to be airing on PBS. In the meantime, here are links to the episodes that you can view online.
Part One is in the “Swamps” –
Part Two is not –

Did you know that the Roseate Spoonbill feed by touch? The spoonbill feeds by swashing its bill from side to side in the water. When it comes in contact with food, it snaps its bill closed capturing its prey. It has extraordinarily fast reflexes and must feed in shallow waters with concentration of its prey. Habitat loss is a major factor in it survival and why it is on the endangered species list.

FlyFish 10K Newsletter from Capt. Bill Baldus, 10,000 Islands, Marco, Naples

by on Oct.03, 2010, under Marco and The 10,000 Islands, Naples

October 2010 Newsletter & Fishing Report

Welcome to another issue of our FlyFish10k  newsletter. We appreciate your patronage and hope you enjoy the information we share about our fishing.  Many of you have fished with us or use our products  in your fishing. We are looking forward to hearing from you and fishing with you again this season.

We are still getting questions about the the BP Oil Spill that occurred this summer. Our beaches are clear and we feel lucky to have had no impact from this event here in south Florida. The well has been sealed and various environmental organizations continue to monitor the impact in the northern Gulf.

We have been busy this month with new inventory, tying some new flies and getting our equipment ready for our fall fishing season. We have added some new  products such as new LOOP saltwater rods and G4 Reels, as well as new fly tying materials including SF Flash and Fish Scale.

Pictured below is our newest collection of flies called the 10k Baitfish Series designed to represent the small baits found both inshore and off-shore. They are simple to tie, swim great and the fish can’t resist. Pick up some SF Flash, Clear Cure UV and some Pelagic Eyes and give them a try.

Check them out at www.flyfish10k.com/10kbaitfishseries

Last month the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission decided to extend the snook release season until September 2011 along the Gulf Coast. This is due to the cold weather fish kill that occurred across the state back in January of last year. This decison will help ensure a quick recovery of this important fishery here in the 10,000 Islands and Everglades.

We have partnered with the Vanderbilt Beach Resort and are offering a 2-day all-inclusive fishing package. This package includes lodging, dinners and 3/4 day fly fishing trip in the 10k for a great price. Click on the image below to see the details.

We recently became a supporter of the Ocean River Institute. This organization provides direct support to local environmental organizations to keep our rivers and oceans clean. They are doing some good work here in Florida in the Indian River Lagoon.

Here is a nice little tarpon we caught on a recent trip with Dr. Carl Angstrom. The amazing part about it is that it was on a size 2 Black & Tan, seven weight rod and in a creek that was not much wider than our skiff. It was all about team work!

Give us a call at 239-272-8027 to book your trip or for a current fishing report.

See you soon,
Capt Bill & Gretchen Baldus

Fishing Report
Fishing Report – 10/01/2010

We had plenty of wind and clouds this week as a tropical depression moved over southwest Florida making for some tough fishing conditions. This was a good week to tie some new patterns and get our equipment ready for the upcoming season. Check out our new 10k Baitfish Series of flies we have been working on under ‘our flies’. These flies have been working great with the large numbers of baitfish showing recently in the Gulf and passes. There are good numbers of mackerel, jacks and ladyfish crashing on the bait schools when the wind is down. Look for birds and surface activity.   Most of the redfish we are seeing are small with an occasional larger fish. We are hoping as the water cools a bit, we will start seeing the bigger reds. The forecast for the upcoming week is for us to see our first temperature below 70 degrees since May. This will cool the water down and change things up.

We will keep you posted,

Capt. Bill

2-hour Intro to Fishing–take your kids, too! Marco Island/Goodland

by on Jul.14, 2010, under Marco and The 10,000 Islands

From Capt. Charles Wright:

Daily Tours @ 9:00 from Marco Island (Goodland)
Great for All Ages and the Whole Family

A Private Introduction to Fishing for your Family and Kids.
Departs Limited to Six Guests – $250
Reservations are required

The outdoors is healthy for families and fishing is an activity that everyone can share. Kids excited about the outdoors and fishing gravitate to these healthy activities and tend not to be as attracted to bad influences as other kids.

However, we have found that the typical fishing charter is not the best introduction to the sport. The time spent on the boat can simply be too long for beginners, particularly for the youngsters. While most fishing guides enjoy fishing kids and families, they tend to focus more on the experienced angler. This is totally understandable, but this trip focuses on kids.

Summer in the ‘Glades with Capt. Charles Wright

by on Jul.14, 2010, under Marco and The 10,000 Islands

Feeling adventurous?  If so, take a look at this:

The Everglades Area is wonderful in the summer. As we shift from sub-tropical to tropical, you can almost watch the flora grow!

We are interacting with manatees and dolphins most every day; We are seeing fresh turtle crawls on the beaches and are expecting the first hatchings in about two weeks;  Orchids are blooming in the sloughs and the deep back-country; The shorebirds are about to fledge; and the Roseate Spoonbills are roosting in the mangroves transforming them into pink “snow cones” in the mornings. You will have to get up early to see them, however!!

Tropical also means rain and thunderstorms in the afternoons.  As such, we are only conducting the kayaking and walking tours in the mornings.  However, the afternoon powerboat tours out of Marco/Goodland are still available. (We can run from the storms in the boat!)

Fishermen, there are plenty of snook, tarpon and redfish, but we are leaving at 5:00 am to catch their early feed.

Please congratulate the winners of last month’s drawing for the free Everglades Guided Eco Tour

Jenny Lynn (Naples, FL)

Tina Forster (Miami, FL)

Laure McCallen (Stoneboro, PA)
