It is hard to believe that it is almost September. We are seeing the days get shorter and are getting ready for fall fishing.
We have been busy tying new flies, adding new products to our catalog and fishing with some new friends. No hurricanes so far (knock on wood), the mosquitos have subsided considerably, a few tarpon around, … life is good.
‘Real Florida BBQ?’–YES, at Texas Tony’s BBQ Shack in Naples!
by Capt. Tommy Thompson on Feb.18, 2011, under Naples
How’s that for a ‘switcheroo’, pardner? When I was invited to eat at Texas Tony’s BBQ Shack in Naples I was skeptical, to say the least. In my humble opinion, Florida has NO BBQ tradition and the chance of finding anything in touristy Naples was a long shot. I expected what most Florida folks call BBQ–essentially a ‘sloppy joe’ and some bad sides.
The tide turned when I met Tony Phelan. He’s a real Texan with a real love of BBQ. His restaurant skills are evident in that he owns the Pinchers Crab Shack chain in SW Florida, one of the great places to eat fresh seafood, especially stone crabs. What cinched the deal with Tony was when he told me he smoked his butts, briskets and tenderloins with CITRUS WOOD, not mesquite or hickory. That’s a real FLORIDA TWIST on BBQ.
The food was excellent. The meat had a nice ‘smoke ring’ and the tenderloin was served medium-rare. No ‘boiled-in-sauce’ meat served here. The flavor of the meat was excellent, and I recommend you skip any sauce–it’s just not necessary!
There’s nothing fancy about Tony’s. You order at the counter, get your own drinks, and help yourself to home-cooked pinto beans, collards and sweet tea.
Don’t miss this place on your next fishing trip to Naples. It’s located at 4519 Tamiami Trail East, four miles south of downtown Naples, just north of Rattlesnake Hammock Road.

Welcome to another issue of our FlyFish10k newsletter. We appreciate your patronage and hope you enjoy the information we share about our fishing. Many of you have fished with us or use our products in your fishing. We are looking forward to hearing from you and fishing with you again this season.
We are still getting questions about the the BP Oil Spill that occurred this summer. Our beaches are clear and we feel lucky to have had no impact from this event here in south Florida. The well has been sealed and various environmental organizations continue to monitor the impact in the northern Gulf. We have been busy this month with new inventory, tying some new flies and getting our equipment ready for our fall fishing season. We have added some new products such as new LOOP saltwater rods and G4 Reels, as well as new fly tying materials including SF Flash and Fish Scale. Pictured below is our newest collection of flies called the 10k Baitfish Series designed to represent the small baits found both inshore and off-shore. They are simple to tie, swim great and the fish can’t resist. Pick up some SF Flash, Clear Cure UV and some Pelagic Eyes and give them a try. Check them out at www.flyfish10k.com/10kbaitfishseries Last month the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission decided to extend the snook release season until September 2011 along the Gulf Coast. This is due to the cold weather fish kill that occurred across the state back in January of last year. This decison will help ensure a quick recovery of this important fishery here in the 10,000 Islands and Everglades. We have partnered with the Vanderbilt Beach Resort and are offering a 2-day all-inclusive fishing package. This package includes lodging, dinners and 3/4 day fly fishing trip in the 10k for a great price. Click on the image below to see the details. We recently became a supporter of the Ocean River Institute. This organization provides direct support to local environmental organizations to keep our rivers and oceans clean. They are doing some good work here in Florida in the Indian River Lagoon. Here is a nice little tarpon we caught on a recent trip with Dr. Carl Angstrom. The amazing part about it is that it was on a size 2 Black & Tan, seven weight rod and in a creek that was not much wider than our skiff. It was all about team work! Give us a call at 239-272-8027 to book your trip or for a current fishing report. See you soon, |
