Hernando and Pasco Gulf Coast

Mary’s Fish Camp, Bayport, Closed

by on Aug.01, 2011, under Hernando and Pasco Gulf Coast

It looks like, due to a long drawn-out battle with the government, that Mary’s Fish Camp on the Mud River at Bayport is now closed.  That’s too bad, as it was one of the last of the ‘real’ Florida fish camps.

Scallop Report, Bayport/Hernando Beach/Aripeka, July 17, 2011

by on Jul.18, 2011, under Hernando and Pasco Gulf Coast

Took a side trip on the way home from Naples yesterday and visited the folks at Weeki Wachee Marina.  Good talk, and learned that they’re having a great year.  Scalloping has been excellent at both Bayport (near the end of the channel in deeper water) and Hernando Beach.  And judging from the crowded Bayport boat ramp, I’d say it’s better than excellent.  Someone told me that there’s just NO parking to be found at that ramp/park after about 10AM!  However, the Jenkins Creek ramp on CR597/Hernando Beach Drive is a good bet, although you’re farther from the Gulf.  Nice ride, though.

Would you believe it? Requests for Scalloping Information! In December!

by on Dec.01, 2010, under Chassahowitzka and Homosassa, Hernando and Pasco Gulf Coast, Horseshoe Beach, Ozello to Crystal River, Port St. Joe, Mexico Beach and St. Joseph Bay, Shell Point to Lanark, Ochlockonee Bay, St. Marks, Aucilla and Econfina, Steinhatchee

I’ve been getting requests for information on bay scallops and our Big Bend bay scalloping season.  So, just to make it easier (and so I don’t forget!), I’ve added a page to this site that deals with that tasty subject.  You’re welcome to read it now by simply clicking on the link at the top right corner of the page that says “bay scallops–the gulf of mexico’s tastiest treat”

Have fun…I’m hungry for scallops already!

2010 Winter Trout and Grouper Closures Ahead for Gulf Waters

by on Jan.24, 2010, under Cedar Key, Chassahowitzka and Homosassa, Hernando and Pasco Gulf Coast, Horseshoe Beach, Keaton Beach to Fenholloway, Ozello to Crystal River, Steinhatchee, Suwannee, Tarpon Springs, Yankeetown and Waccasassa

Just a reminder that the season for spotted sea trout closes from February 1-29 in the northern region (from Fred Howard Park in Tarpon Springs to the Alabama line.  Grouper closures affect the entire Gulf of Mexico and run from February 1 to March 31.

This last week of January will likely see a flurry of activitiy at Big Bend ports, including Steinhatchee, Crystal River,  Cedar Key, Horseshoe Beach, Suwannee, Keaton Beach and Homosassa.  Trout have been active in the rivers, especially since the early January cold spells, and a few larger specimens are being caught on the close-in rocky flats.  Grouper fishing is good, but winds have kept a few anglers close to home.   Weather forecasts for the last week of January look good, after the passage of a cold front on Tuesday.

Options for anglers wanting to fish in closed months include sheepshead, black sea bass and Florida snapper (pink-mouth grunts) for the offshore folks, and redfish for the inshore anglers.  I’ll be posting specific options in my weekly Florida Sportsman Big Bend Fishing4Cast columns, posted online each Thursday.

“We want to surprise, almost confuse viewers, but ultimately intrigue them, leading them to that ‘aha’ moment when they realize the end result,” says Sportsman Channel’s President, Willy Burkhardt.

Over the following weeks leading up to the “big reveal” on June 29th, new messages will appear on the network as well as on Facebook. You can see this week’s commercial here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Sportsman-Channel/128266290272
