Horseshoe Beach
Lighthouse Restaurant, Fanning Springs (Suwannee)–new hours
by Capt. Tommy Thompson on Jun.08, 2009, under Horseshoe Beach, Steinhatchee, Suwannee
Citing economic slowdown, the Lighthouse Restaurant in Fanning Springs is now closed Mondays and Tuesdays. They still have a good buffet and AYCE specials.
Restaurant Updates, Cross City (Closest to Horseshoe Beach)
by Capt. Tommy Thompson on Jun.08, 2009, under Horseshoe Beach, Steinhatchee, Suwannee
The Carriage Inn has re-opened their restaurant. It’s now called Pat’s Country Kitchen and is serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, buffet-style. I’ve asked some of my lumber mill buddies for reports, and will post ‘thumbs-up’ or ‘thumbs-down’ when they check in.
Elaine’s Sugar Butter Biscuit comes highly recommended. It’s in front of the El Dorado Motel, across from Dixie County High School on US 19/98. Lots of cars in the lot, and some great reports of homestyle cooking. They’re open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, M-F 6:30-2 and 5:30-8:30. No dinner on Friday.
It’s now known as the ‘Fried Chicken Drive-Thru’, but I really don’t know the official name of the place. It’s on the east side of US 19/98 and according to gastronome Rick Davidson, they have the best fried chicken around. Not sure of hours or whether or not they have gizzards and livers. Let me know if you find out more.

Tournament Results, Reeling For Kids, Steinhatchee, May 15 & 16
by Capt. Tommy Thompson on May.19, 2009, under Cedar Key, Chassahowitzka and Homosassa, Horseshoe Beach, Keaton Beach to Fenholloway, Ozello to Crystal River, Steinhatchee, Suwannee, Yankeetown and Waccasassa
Over 90 boats entered this year’s Doug Johnson/Donnie Young Reeling for Kids Tournament at Steinhatchee. This tournament benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Alachua County.
You’ll notice that my name does not appear under the ‘Spotted Red’ category, as my fishing buddy, Capt. Rick Davidson, told me that there was NO SPOTS CATEGORY, and that I might as well throw my 14-spotter back! Something tells me I’ll read the rules myself next year!
